For a long time now I have fancied myself rocking a pair of wide swing pants in the style of Katherine Hepburn and when I discovered these at the Vintage Fashion Library, well we just had to meet up. That was when trouble began. Firstly they came with a caveat that they really measured up to a 32″ when constructed and not the size stated, not insurmountable so I took them on knowing that there would be a number of significant alterations and boy was I right! I won’t bore you with the details but just say that if I ever get to a point where these fit like the proverbial glove and make me look anything other than Toulouse Lautrec then I’ll cast the pattern in bronze for prosperity!
The muslin is a bit snug and the crotch could house a family of chipmunks. However persevere I did, though I think my sketch is a bit optimistic!. I have already cut the fabric a nice linen with a vertical stripe – throwing everything at these! I will post the finished article soon as I am using this post as much to concentrate the mind to actually finish, as to share with you the trauma which is the fitting of pants!

Ugh…you’re a much braver (and surely more talented) a sewist than I! Good luck with these, and I look forward to seeing how they turn out. Love the sketch…they’re almost palazzo like pants.
Oh I don’t know about that! Thanks for the luck I’m gonna need it!
Pants making scares me! But I’d love to have a pair of these!
…and me tho in hindsight I should have used a more modern pattern with actual construction details!
Pants-making seems like the final frontier to me…very brave of you to venture forth!
PS – like your new Header ”sketch’…did you use an App to do that? I just discovered Paper53 via Gillian at Crafting a Rainbow.
Spent more time scratching my head than actual sewing- if these work on any level I’ll be gob-smacked!
The header is a free hand sketch of mine, used a marker pen on paper and took a picture – fairly low tech I’m afraid. Thanks for the tip I’ll be taking a look
Oh you poor thing. Good luck and I promise to join you soon in the pant fitting trauma (i’ll be making Clovers).
Muslin didn’t look too bad in the photo though … I’ve seen a lot worse in my trouser-making class where there were 12 or so of us walking funnily in huge muslin pants!
Oh thanks for that, glad to hear not just me then! Good Luck with yours. Love the Clovers and plenty of tuts to help so hopefully not too bad! : )
I love a nice wide leg tailored pant with a cuff….absolutely classic!
Cheers,
Laura
….Oh me too, unfortunately they would shorten my already short legs!
Good luck with the swing pants…your sketch is wonderful! The three button on the side is so classic of that style.
thank you
